Villa Lyan Academy was founded as a nonprofit organization to meet the educational, developmental, emotional, and communicative needs of children and young adults with special needs
We provide services from ages 4 through 22. The Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) prohibits students from receiving a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) past the age 22 BUT we have and answer for Uncle Sam; more on that later.
Our students are STUDENTS FIRST. Like everyone else, they wear many different titles, labels, and hats. Some of these labels include but are not limited to: Autism, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disabilities, Developmentally Delayed, Prader-Willi syndrome, Down Syndrome, Visually impaired, Physically Impaired, and Angelman Syndrome are just a few. Nonetheless, they are still students!
Consequently, our curriculum is individualized and tailor-made to target areas of “need” for each child. “Unique Learning System” is our school’s primary web-based curriculum. “Mindplay”, “Learning A-Z”, and “Moby Max” are supplemental web-based instructional programs that our teachers use.
Additionally, all our students work out their mind, body, and soul with a certified recreational therapist in their Adaptive Physical Education class. There’s more! We also provide (at no cost to our parents) therapeutic horse-riding at Whispering Manes weekly!!!
“Well…….What happens when my child turns 22?” you may be thinking. Well, Villa Lyan Academy is located at the same location with Villa Lyan Adult Day Training to expand our vision. This “Vision” makes it possible in enhancing the quality of life for children with special needs and their families. These one-stop “Wrap-Around” services, combined with a team oriented approach, allows Villa Lyan to uniquely position ourselves to provide educational, recreational, and rehabilitation programs at one location.
This uniqueness has enabled us to have an official affiliation with “Project Embrace” through the Medical College and Florida International University. Together, we hope to continue to make these wrap-around services comprehensible.
